The banteng is an endangered species and their population has decreased more than 50% in the last few decades. Some research shows that, in some areas, population has gone from 1,000 individuals to 485 and less. Poaching is their main threat, driven by want for horns, game, food and medicine. Competition with other animals and habitat change (such as deforestation) are other reasons for their decline.
