Food Consumption
Stages of Food Waste
During growth and collection, 8% of crops are wasted
Due to bad transportation or storage, another 8% of meat and crops are wasted
During cooking stages to prepare food, 1.5% of raw food is wasted
While being transported to stores, about 4% of food can be spilled
11.5% is wasted when we throw away leftovers
Food Consumption
Even though we throw away ¼ to ½ of our food, 1 in 9 people goes hungry for long periods of time. The following are the different amounts of food we waste:
20% of dairy is wasted
20% of meat is wasted
20% of legumes (the seed family) are wasted
30% of seafood is wasted
30% of cereal is wasted
45% of fruits and vegetables are wasted
Look below to see how you can prevent food waste:
Stale Bread
Stale bread isn't totally bad. It can still be used for breadcrumbs.
Coffee Grounds
Coffee grounds can be placed in containers to get rid of odors throughout your house.
Brown Bananas
If bananas are brown, instead of throwing them away, use them for recipes such as banana bread.
Serving Size
Pay attention to how much you put on your plate: it might be to much.
Oddly Shaped Fruits
If fruits are oddly shaped, it doesn't mean they are bad.
Used Oil
Used oil can be reused to fuel cars.
Best Before Date
The best before date tells you when a food is recommended to be eaten by, but sometimes these estimates are incorrect. It is ok to eat food past the expiration date, as long as it is not bad.
Leftovers
Sometimes you can't eat your full meal and you have leftovers. Just don't throw it in the trash. Put it in a reusable container and put in the fridge. Bam, just like that, you have another meal!
